OK. How about matrix and scalar names, are the output-formatting constr
aints applicable for these too?

I don't think the variable length is the most important question for gretl,
there are other much more important questions, but if it was not too hard
to implement it would make it easier to write functions if longer names
were allowed, especially for matrices and scalars.
