I've just done a CVS update in doc/tex_pt, and I'm able to build 
both the Guide and the Reference OK.  I tried both "--with-lucida" 
(using the Lucida fonts) and without.  So I'm not sure what the 
problem is.  Are you using the Makefile?  

I would maybe try deleting *.aux *.toc *.out then re-running 
"make".
