yes, I know the "set debug x" feature. 
I just wanted to mention it. Perhaps someone listening has to much spare time and is looking for new challenging tasks :)

Admittedly this is something we haven't thought about much at this
point.  To be sure, we don't have anything such as you describe
for R.  We do, however, have the ability to

  set debug 1

or

  set debug 2

with effects as described in the help entry for the "set" command.
