I'm very sorry, I have no idea of what the difference between scrolling mode
and window mode is. Is this something windows-specific? Just in case, I'll
shoot a wild guess.

You have two apps that come with gretl, the command-line client and the
graphical client. I'm assuming that, like most windows users, you're using the
graphical client. There are basically 3 ways to use the program:

1) via the menus: in this case, when you issue a command, a new window opens
with the results.
2) via a script: when you run the script, a new window opens after completion
with the results.
3) through the console: this is most similar to the command-line interface.
Basically, you open a command window, you type in commands as you would in a
script and results are displayed in that same window.

I may be wrong, but it sounds like you want to use (3): it's under
"Outils->Console gretl" in the french version.
