at first glance it seems to also have cured the problem of the
"unspecified errors" I was getting, at least when the function package
exits normally or with a funcerr, as opposed to failing for other reasons.

Let me check whether gretl is also more robust with respect to
non-caught function errors..... <checking...> yes looks good so far!
