For 'Are you suggesting that something should be done or just that the error
message ('Unspecified error') should be more informative?'

The latter--  I am suggesting something more informative.  Maybe if 0 rows
of data read, then the error message could be 'No data found, after offsets
(x,y)'

Yes, this would be very neat.

Also, the same syntax should be applied to the "append" command.
