What packages are you using?  The ones from 
http://packages.debian.org/gretl or ...?

To troubleshoot the program, open a Terminal window and type

gretl <Enter>

You should presumably see some sort of error message.

If you want to try building from source, I guess you'd have to 
uninstall the gretl binary package first.

I think what you want is

genr y = ranking(x)
