two small additions to sven's excellent step-by-step guide:

1) if you want to compile the tex sources for the manuals, you may want to 
use the --without-lucida switch to configure, together with 
--enable-build-doc

2) a reasonably detailed and updated description of the prerequisite 
packages you need to have installed before attempting the build is given 
as the appendix B to the User's guide.
