Did you install gretl from a pre-made .dmg file?  The .dmg 
includes a version of gnuplot that works well with gretl (or 
should do so); other versions of gnuplot may or may not work.

However, I haven't tested on OS X lately; I'll do so soon and see 
if I can come up with any suggestions.
