Further to my last message, I've just heard from my 'original' student that only version 1.7.8 would work (non-Intel mac with X11 re-installed from her install disk).

Ideally, we should have a so-called "universal binary" package for
gretl on OS X (which will run equally well on PPC and Intel). But
we're short of Mac expertise and we don't have such a thing.

If your student has a PPC mac (go to the Apple icon on the menu
bar and look at "About this Mac") then the current disk image will
not work, it's purely Intel. In that case, using the PPC
disk image of gretl 1.6.5 is currently the only option.
