Please start gnuplot and test that command. Here is my output in Ubuntu:
helio at linux4one:~$ gnuplot

gnuplot>

Verify if you have the same patchlevel in Gnuplot. It probably does not 
support 'png'. You can see all possible terminals with plain:
gnuplot> set term

What is your Debian version?
